Latest ‘Alarming’ News Dateline 20 January 12009: National Library of Australia – Madams Josephine Thompson, Lisa Mackie – reject 6 year old Tara Hogan’s First Children Book, “Civilization Time” and special request to encourage children to be more than passive users, rather than authors. This appalling callous behaviour just when President Barack Obama’s Inauguration speech emphasizes that it’s Time for “Civilty” around the world. It would seem either Tara’s CT Book is ‘two’ simple or NLA staff are ‘too’ simple. What do you think?

Thank you for your email regarding the Cataloguing-in-Publication (CiP) record which has been provided for the publication ‘Civilization time’…
With regard to legal deposit, because of the format and content of ‘Civilization time’, on this occasion, there is no requirement to deposit a copy with the National Library under legal deposit provisions. Under legal deposit provisions, the Library collects print formats of material including books, periodicals, newspapers, sheet music, maps, plans, pamphlets, tables, brochures and catalogues…

Thanks for your email…
As for the extra blurb you requested, partly this book is for my 6 year old daughter Tara, and generally to encourage children to not just read, buy or borrow books from the library, but to have their own listing – to write and publish little books, and along the way find out about history / check for themselves, especially origins, and to learn tolerance for other cultures. So that’s one of the reasons it has been kept very very simple.
We intend soon to setup a homepage blog so kids around the world can get involved e.g. What does “Civilization Time” mean to them; how do they write it in their language; what should be in any Timeline as a major milestone or invention, like writing in Sumer.

Lisa, is there anyway the NLA could help the ulltimate goal along, say by sending Tara some kind of official looking reply to her…
As per Legal Deposit requirements we will soon be sending out our little CT Book (box set) to the NLA, and your department if you wish to supply an address. Production is a little slow at the moment as Tara prefers to watch her Playhouse Disney channel.
Thanks and Regards
Peter and Tara Hogan

I’ve just been looking over your CiP application for “Civilisation time” and require some more details about the subject content of the work.
Perhaps you have an blurb or an excerpt that you could send across? Any additional information that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
